You might have seen some controversy around this mineral in the crystal world and thought, hmm I’ll stay away from that. Maybe you bought some and now are wondering if it is fake? Well hopefully I can help clear some of that confusion up.
Sphalerite in its true form is a metallic mineral made of zinc sulfide, and it is not this druzy sparkly crystal we have come to associate with Sphalerite. These crystals have been given the name Sphalerite as a blanket term or a trade name because its often found in the same location or a close location as Sphalerite. Because of this, they do sometimes have Sphalerite inclusions. However, they are mainly composed of quartz and agate with some form of iron, ore, and zinc inclusions. The inclusions is what give them their brown, grey, and black coloration.
Basically, this quartz inclusion mineral is rarely ever tested to make sure they have any amount of Sphalerite in them before being sold under the name Sphalerite. A more appropriate name would be sugar quartz or even ore quartz, but unfortunately for Sphalerite its name has already been taken over by these sparkly crystals. They are real crystals, but the likelihood of them containing Sphalerite is kind of a gamble. They are undoubtedly beautiful though.
